Washington and Lee leads VaSID Men's Soccer All-State College Honors
The Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID) released its 2024 College Division Men’s Soccer All-State teams on Thursday morning. WINCHESTER, Va. - The Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID) released its 2024 College Division Men's Soccer All-State teams on Thursday morning. The University of Mary Washington and Washington and Lee University claimed two major awards each, while the University of Lynchburg earned the Rookie of the Year honor.
Washington and Lee's Weyimi Agbeyegbe was named Player of the Year, while head coach Lumumba Shabazz shared Co-Coach of the Year honors with Mary Washington's Jason Kilby. The Eagles' Freddy Rogers was selected as Defensive Player of the Year, and Lynchburg's William Casey rounded out the major awards as Rookie of the Year.
Agbeyegbe, a senior forward, led the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) in goals with 14 and ranked second in assists with seven, en route to earning ODAC Player of the Year and First Team All-ODAC honors. Rogers, a goalkeeper, started all 23 games for Mary Washington, recording 63 saves and a 0.84 goals-against average (GAA). Rogers earned First Team All-America honors from the United Soccer Coaches, while Agbeyegbe was named to the Second Team.
Shabazz, in his first year at the helm of Washington and Lee, guided the Generals to a 15-4-6 record and an NCAA Championship semifinals appearance for the third time in four seasons. Kilby, in his 13th season as head coach at Mary Washington, led the Eagles to their sixth NCAA Tournament appearance during his tenure after capturing the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (CAC) championship with a victory over Christopher Newport University.
Casey, a freshman defender from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, started all 21 games for Lynchburg in his debut season. The ODAC Rookie of the Year contributed offensively with three goals and three assists.
Carter Berg (Mary Washington) and Manzi Shalita (Lynchburg) joined Agbeyegbe as first-team forwards. The midfield included Nelsar Castillo (Mary Washington), Alex Moody (Virginia Wesleyan), Nathan Yared (Shenandoah), and Zach Whelan (Lynchburg). The defensive unit featured Benjamin Velasquez, ODAC Defensive Player of the Year, alongside his Lynchburg teammate Casey and Washington and Lee's PJ Ryan. Rogers rounded out the first team as goalkeeper.
Washington and Lee and Lynchburg each had five players named across the first and second teams.
