Virginia Tech and Virginia headline VaSID University Women's Indoor Track & Field Honors

2022-23 VaSID University Division Women's Indoor Track & Field All-State Team
NORFOLK, Va. -- The University of Virginia and Virginia Tech headline the VaSID College Division All-State Women's Indoor Track & Field teams as announced Thursday afternoon by the Virginia State Sports Information Directors Association.
Dave Cianelli was named the VaSID Coach of the Year following a 2022-23 season where he was named the ACC Indoor Women's Coach of the Year. The Hokies swept the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships as the women's team won their second consecutive indoor championship meet with 93 points. VT's women's team won the weight throw, triple jump, and pole vault events. The Tech women earned 14 All-ACC honors, including seven top three finishers. Rebecca Mammel won the women's throw with an ACC indoor meet record. The Hokies were awarded seven USTFCCCA All-American honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships with Mammel (weight throw) and Kenna Stimmel (pole vault) earning USTFCCCA First Team All-America. Mammel was named the USTFCCCA Southeast Region Women's Field Athlete of the Year, Stimmel was named the ACC Freshman of the Year.
First year Kenna Stimmel collected two top VaSID honors being named both the VaSID Field Athlete and VaSID Field Rookie of the Year. She earned USTFCCCA First Team All-America honors placing fourth at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships clearing 4.40m. She was the only pole vault freshman to qualify and compete at the Indoor Championships. Stimmel won the ACC Indoor Championships clearing 4.40m, and earned All-ACC First Team honors. She was named the ACC Freshman of the Year. She cleared a personal-best height of 4.45m at the Doc Hale Meet finishing first among collegiate athletes. Named ACC Performer of the Week. Placed first among collegiate athletes at the Lenny Lyles Invitational with a height of 4.38m.
UVA's Margot Appleton and Sarah Akpan claimed the remaining two VaSID of the Year honors with Appleton being named the VaSID Track Athlete of the Year and Akpan claiming the VaSID Track Rookie of the Year honors.
Appleton garnered first-team All-American honors in the mile after placing fourth in the mile at the NCAA Championship. She was a second-team All-ACC honoree in the 3000m after finishing fourth in the 3000m at the ACC Championships. Appleton anchored a school-record DMR performance (10:55.94) to place fourth at the ACC Championships. She ran a personal-best mile at the David Hemery Valentine Invite clocking 4:33.82, qualifying her for the NCAA Championships. Appleton broke a Virginia record in the 3000 meters running 9:04.69 on the JDL Fast Track at the Camel City Invitational.
Akpan set a personal best in the 60m at the ACC Indoor Championships running 7.48, a time that ranked fourth among freshman all-time at UVA, and ninth overall. She set a personal record in the 200m at the Tiger Paw Invite running 24.00, a time that ranked second all-time among UVA freshman and seventh overall. Akpan helped to finish sixth in the 4x400m at the ACC Championships with a time of 3:39.65.

VaSID names 44 all-state teams in 23 sports each year, as well as an Academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a university or conference in the state of Virginia.
